Electric Outdoors Launches Sustainable Off-Grid Glamping Experience in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
DETROIT, Michigan, September 25, 2024 – Electric Outdoors, Inc., a startup building sustainable off-grid glamping solutions, is proud to announce the launch of its first-ever pilot program in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The program, which was designed in partnership with Innovate Marquette SmartZone, enables the deployment of EO Canopy units in strategic locations in Marquette and surrounding townships.
The EO Canopy is a first-of-its-kind destination camping platform fully powered by sustainable sources, making energy, water, waste handling, satellite internet, and Level 2 EV charging available completely off the grid. With its pilot units, Electric Outdoors is pioneering an entirely new approach to glamping, focused on sustainable energy generation and connectivity.
“We are incredibly excited to bring this product to the remote and beautiful Upper Peninsula, where we can really put it to the test. The EO Canopy is designed to bring a top-notch glamping experience to EV drivers, overlanders, and other campers who want to get away from the hustle of daily life without sacrificing creature comforts,” said Josef Hjelmaker, founder and CEO of Electric Outdoors.
The pilot program kicked off in Negaunee in late August and is expected to run through the end of the camping season. The Upper Peninsula location was chosen because of the area’s commitment to paving the way for future-proof outdoor recreation, with a focus on electric mobility and sustainable experiences.
“Running this pilot in and around Marquette with its beautiful Lake Superior shoreline, and where you are really embraced by the outdoors and all its possibilities, is such a privilege,” said Hjelmaker.
Supporting its mission to revolutionize how people access the outdoors sustainably, Electric Outdoors is partnering with other innovative startups in the outdoor and e-mobility space to provide a curated, fully off-grid glamping experience to participants. Nashville, Tennessee-based Coast RV has provided one of its high-end, all-electric Model 1 trailers as an alternative for guests staying at the Negaunee location, and it's completely powered by the EO Canopy's off-grid energy system.
In addition to introducing the EO Canopy to consumers on an invite-only basis, the pilot program is designed to offer landowners, investors, and other stakeholders the opportunity to experience the unit’s capabilities first-hand. The portable, all-electric system enables landowners in remote areas and vulnerable municipalities to unlock their land without the need for expensive grid or utility infrastructure development, creating new revenue opportunities and addressable markets.
