Camping season will be here before we know it, and if you haven’t started planning your spring and summer adventures yet, what are you waiting for?

If you’re looking for your next camping destination, Michigan should be on your list. The state boasts some spectacular scenery alongside more than 100 state parks and endless outdoor recreation opportunities. Here are seven reasons to plan a camping trip to the Great Lakes State.

1. Diverse Landscapes

Michigan is home to an abundance of natural beauty. From the sandy shores of the Great Lakes to the dense forests of the Upper Peninsula, there’s something here for every RVer. Want to wake up to the sound of waves crashing against the shoreline, hike through lush forests, and marvel at scenic overlooks? You’ve come to the right state.

2. State and National Parks

Michigan features numerous state parks, national forests, and national lakeshores, as well as a remote national park. These protected areas generally offer well-maintained, modern campgrounds with full hookups and other amenities—but there are also plenty of rustic options for those looking for an off-the-grid adventure. Popular destinations like Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and Tahquamenon Falls State Park show off the state's natural beauty and are the perfect starting points for campers.

3. Scenic Drives and Byways

Experience the state's natural beauty from the comfort of your own vehicle. Michigan’s extensive network of scenic drives and byways is perfect for RV travel and road-tripping. Cruise along the shoreline of Lake Michigan on the M-22 route, traverse the Tunnel of Trees, or embark on the Great Lakes Circle Tour. All these routes will delight you with breathtaking vistas, charming towns, and plenty of things to do along the way.

4. Year-Round Camping

Michigan's four distinct seasons provide year-round opportunities for campers and RVers. In the summer, enjoy swimming, boating, and hiking in state parks and the Great Lakes. Fall brings vibrant foliage and colorful scenic drives, while winter is perfect for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and cozying up around a campfire. Head out in spring to see wildflowers blooming and migratory birds returning to their nesting grounds. With many campgrounds and RV parks open year-round, there’s no wrong season to get outside in Michigan.

5. Outdoor Activities

From fishing and birdwatching to kayaking and mountain biking, Michigan offers a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities. Anglers can cast a line in one of thousands of inland lakes or fish for salmon and trout in rivers and streams. Go birdwatching along the state's birding trails or paddle scenic waterways like the Au Sable River or the Huron River Water Trail. No matter what your activity of choice is, you’ll find it in Michigan.

6. RV-Friendly Infrastructure

Michigan's RV-friendly infrastructure makes it easy to explore the state by RV. Many campgrounds and RV parks offer spacious sites with full hookups, dump stations, and other amenities. In addition to private campgrounds, numerous state parks and national forests provide RV-friendly campsites that range from rustic to luxe. Enjoy smooth RV travel on the state’s well-maintained roadways and scenic byways, and if something goes wrong, RV service centers and repair shops are plentiful.

7. Rich Cultural and Historical Heritage

Beyond its natural beauty, Michigan is home to a rich cultural and historical heritage. Explore lighthouses along the Great Lakes coastlines, tour historic forts and settlements, and learn about the state's Indigenous history at cultural centers and museums. Charming small towns and vibrant cities host festivals and events throughout the year to celebrate Michigan's diverse heritage and traditions. Whether you're interested in history, art, or food, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the local scene.
